ACTE / NCACTE Awards Program

Our Quest for Winners - YOU!!! What are you waiting for? Nominate yourself or someone from your division! The deserving recognition is waiting for you. And to think - all you have to do is to apply. All candidate applications must be submitted to the NCACTE Awards Committee by May 1, 2011.

Every division is requested to send in nominations for the five main NCACTE Awards:

NCACTE Teacher of the Year... To recognize teachers who are providing outstanding career and technical education programs for youth and/or adults in their respective fields and communities. Recipients of this award must have made significant contributions toward innovative, unique and novel programs that are serving to improve and promote career and technical education.

NCACTE Outstanding Career and Technical Professional... To recognize career and technical educators, other than full-time classroom/laboratory teachers, who have recently provided or currently are providing significant contributions to professional associations and career and technical education programs for youth and/or adults in their fields, communities and/or states. Recipients of this award must have made significant contributions toward innovative, unique and novel programs; and/or improvement, promotion, research or development of programs of career and technical education.

NCACTE Outstanding Teacher in Community Service... The purpose of this award is to recognize teachers with significant accomplishments and outstanding leadership in programs and activities that promote community involvement. Recipients of this award must have made significant contributions toward training, motivating, and inspiring their peers and students to become involved in programs and projects that benefit their communities.

NCACTE Outstanding New Career and Technical Teacher... This award is meant to encourage new teachers to remain in the profession. Recipients of this award must have made significant contributions toward innovative, unique and novel programs and have shown a professional commitment early in their careers.

NCACTE Policy Maker of the Year... This award is presented annually by the NCACTE Board of Directors to recognize policymakers who have made a contribution of significance to career and technical education.

* Please note: State winners must be current ACTE members in order to be recognized at and compete in the regional awards program. If a state winner does not meet the membership requirements set by ACTE, the state winner will be recognized only at the state level.

The NCACTE Awards Program seeks to promote excellence in career and technical education by recognizing individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the field, programs that exemplify the highest standards and organizations that have conducted activities to promote and expand career and technical education programs. During the past year, there were numerous nominations for these awards. We would like to congratulate all of our division nominees.

The "NCACTE Teacher of the Year" Award is to recognize a teacher who is providing outstanding CTE programs for youth and/or adults in their respective field and community. The recipient of this award must have made significant contributions toward innovative, unique and novel programs that are serving to improve and promote CTE. Our nominees are Carolyn Banks, Ivy Farmer, Matt Harris, Tara King, Julia Ray, Amy Singletary, Linda West, and Scot Whitfield. In a letter of support for our Teacher of the Year, it was stated by his CTE Director that our winner "demonstrates the highest level of professional commitment in his work with students and colleagues. His personal characteristics such as patience, consideration and good judgment are great assets to the school where he teaches. He is an excellent role model for students and can always be counted on to go the extra mile." One of his students said, "The most incredible thing about this teacher, advisor, and mentor is that he shows confidence in all of his students. He shows them all that they can be and all that they can do. He gives them a push in the right direction and strides right behind them, ready to catch them whenever they may stumble. I thank Mr. Whitfield for my successes and for being there when I most needed someone to believe in me."

Our 2010“NCACTE Teacher of the Year” is Scot Whitfield. He is a Trade and Industry (T&I) Teacher at West Carteret High School in Morehead City, NC.

The "NCACTE Outstanding Career and Technical Educator" Award is to recognize CTE educators, other than full-time classroom/laboratory teachers, who have recently provided or currently are providing significant contributions to professional associations and CTE programs for youth and/or adults in their field, community, and state. The recipient of this award must have made significant contributions toward innovative, unique and novel programs; and/or improvement, promotion, research or development of CTE programs. Our nominees are Felecia Grey Watson, Willie Harriett, Nancye Hart, Nora McDuffie, Joan McGinnis, Daryl Nobles, Joshua Starling, Bena Weires, and Linda Wiggins. In a letter of support for our Outstanding CTE Educator, our winner’s CTE Director stated" "that by every standard this nominee is one of the most outstanding administrators to have ever served our teachers and students. He has demonstrated a strong commitment to the vision and goals of CTE." A former student and now educator said "his love of CTE is evident and contagious." In addition, a colleague of our Outstanding CTE Educator said "Daryle demonstrates a true passion for CTE and for providing opportunities to nurture a future workforce that is ready to face 21st Century challenges head-on and with high-demand skills. Daryl is leader in the field in this state, and I count myself fortunate to be able to work with him."

Our 2010 “NCACTE Outstanding Career and Technical Educator” is Daryle Nobles. He is a CTE Coordinator with Cumberland County Schools in Fayetteville, NC.

The “NCACTE Outstanding New Career and Technical Education Teacher” Award is meant to encourage new teachers to remain in the profession. The recipient of this award must have made significant contributions toward innovative, unique and novel programs and have shown a professional commitment early in his/her career. Our nominees are Kim Barkley, Michael Holman, Josh Justice, Michael Lewis, Nicole Motley, Pamela Orbison, Chamber Starling, and Hillary Steere. Our “Outstanding New CTE Teacher” believes that although all high school courses are important and necessary for graduation, CTE courses are unique in that they provide students with a glimpse of potential future careers. Through personal experience, our winner has learned to never underestimate the power of just one person. She believes it takes only one person to trigger a positive, domino effect on countless others. Her CTE Director says she is a high energy self-starter who quickly assumes responsibility and is not afraid to face new challenges. A parent said in a letter of support … “how did our family become so lucky? Mrs. Steere enthusiasm for DECA is contagious --- her program has grown to be one of the largest high school DECA chapters in North Carolina in less than three years.” A student remarked, “What I admire most about Mrs. Steere is her total and full commitment to her students both inside and outside of the classroom.”

Our 2010“NCACTE Outstanding New Career and Technical Education Teacher” is Hillary Steere. She is a Marketing and Business Education Teacher at Marvin Ridge High School in Waxhaw, NC.

The “NCACTE Outstanding Teacher in Community Service” Award is to recognize a teacher with significant accomplishments and outstanding leadership in programs and activities that promote community involvement. The recipient of this award must have made significant contributions toward training, motivating, and inspiring their peers and students to become involved in programs and projects that benefit their communities. Our nominees are Thomas Barlow, Patricia Barnard, Kaye Harris, Michael Holman, Pam Lineberger, Crystal Payton-Demry, and Myra Spitzoff. A colleague said in his letter of support … “I have never known someone who has made more significant contributions toward training, motivating and inspiring her peers, and especially her students to become involved in programs and projects that benefit their community.” Through our winner’s leadership, her students collected over $14,000.00 to help people that they did not know and probably never will know. Her CTE Director says, “Both in the classroom and in person, Mrs. Harris is a dynamic and powerful communicator who possesses the gift of being able to make complex subjects understandable. She is a humble and approachable person who loves to share her extensive knowledge with others, her students in particular.”

Our 2010“NCACTE Outstanding Teacher in Community Service” is Kaye Harris. She is an Agriculture Education Teacher at Crest High School in Shelby, NC.
